Reheat the lasagna: So it doesn’t dry out

If you have made too much lasagne, you can keep it in the fridge for a day or freeze it for several weeks without any loss of quality.

Some even find that it tastes even better on the second day because the flavors combine over time.

To enjoy them a second time, they should then be reheated in the right way.

How do you reheat lasagne? Lasagne is best reheated in the oven by sprinkling it with water, covering it with aluminum foil and placing it in an oven preheated to 180 °C for 20 minutes. Shortly before the end of the baking time, you can remove the foil, sprinkle the lasagne with cheese and finish baking in grill mode at 220 °C.

In this article, you will learn in detail how to reheat lasagne in the oven, in the microwave, in a pan and even in a hot air fryer.

The best way to reheat lasagne (in the oven)

Reheating lasagne in the oven

An excellent result can be achieved by reheating leftover lasagna in the oven.

This method is best used when the lasagne is still in the baking dish.

In principle, you could also put lasagna on a plate in the oven, but then it is difficult to put aluminum foil over it so that the lasagna dries out.

Reheating lasagne in the oven – here’s how:

  1. Take the lasagna out of the fridge 30 minutes in advance.
  2. Preheat the oven to 180 °C top and bottom heat.
  3. Drizzle the lasagna with a little water and cover with aluminum foil.
  4. Bake the lasagne in the oven for about 20 minutes.
  5. Take out of the oven 5 minutes before the time is up, remove the aluminum foil and sprinkle with cheese. Then switch on the grill mode or increase the temperature to 200 °C and finish baking.

Reheating lasagne in the microwave (quickest method)

The microwave is a good choice for heating up a small portion of lasagna.

The result is not quite as tasty as in the oven because the heat is not distributed as evenly and you can’t get the top layer of cheese as well, but it is much quicker.

Reheating lasagne in the microwave – here’s how:

  1. Take the lasagna out of the fridge 30 minutes in advance.
  2. Serve on a plate suitable for the microwave and drizzle with a little water.
  3. Cover with a microwave lid or baking paper (not aluminum foil!).
  4. Heat the lasagne for 1 to 2 minutes at 600 watts, sprinkle with cheese and then reheat for a further 5 minutes at 360 watts.
  5. Leave the lasagne to cool for a minute and serve.

Reheating lasagne in the pan

If you don’t have an oven, you can also reheat leftover lasagna in a pan.

Reheating lasagna in the pan – here’s how:

  1. Cut the lasagna into pieces and place them in the pan.
  2. Spoon 3 to 4 tablespoons over each piece of lasagne
  3. Switch the stove to medium heat until the liquid in the pan simmers.
  4. Cover the pan and reduce the heat to low.
  5. Cook the lasagne in this way for 20 minutes. Remove the lid a few minutes before the end of the cooking time.

Reheating lasagne in the steamer

A steamer is the gentlest way to reheat lasagne, as the steam prevents it from drying out and heats it very evenly.

Reheating lasagne in the steamer – here’s how:

  1. Bring the water to the boil.
  2. Steam the lasagne for 5 minutes until warm.

Reheating lasagne in the air fryer

It may sound a little unusual, but it is possible to heat lasagne in a hot air fryer.

You can even see the result perfectly!

Reheating lasagne in the air fryer – here’s how:

  1. Preheat the hot air fryer to 180 °C.
  2. Use the bread pan and place a piece of lasagna in it.
  3. Cover the bread pan with aluminum foil.
  4. Heat the lasagna for about 10 minutes.

Which lasagna can be reheated?

Classic Bolognese lasagne can easily be stored and reheated later. With other types of lasagne, it depends on which ingredients are included. Lasagne with mushrooms should not be reheated, and care should also be taken with spinach lasagne.

Classic lasagne with Bolognese

Classic lasagne with Bolognese ragout can usually be reheated without any problems. To avoid any complaints about the minced meat, follow the instructions for correct storage.

The lasagne can be kept in the fridge for a maximum of 3 days, in airtight packaging, and should not be left at room temperature for more than 2 hours.

Lasagna with mushrooms

Mushrooms are a perishable food and should only be reheated under strict storage conditions. If stored poorly, reheating mushroom lasagne can cause stomach problems. However, there is usually no danger when heating above 70 °C, as all bacteria are killed.

Lasagne with spinach

Lasagne with spinach should only be reheated once. Heating increases the nitrate content in spinach and, above a certain level, poses a potential risk to pregnant women and babies.

Lasagne with salmon

Salmon lasagne should be reheated after a day at the latest and always check that the salmon is still good beforehand. If the lasagne looks unappetizing or smells unpleasant, it must be thrown away. However, there is usually no danger when heating above 70 °C, as all bacteria are killed.

Can you eat reheated lasagna during pregnancy?

Bolognese lasagne can easily be eaten a day later during pregnancy if it is stored properly and the best-before date is observed.

Nevertheless, special care should be taken during pregnancy: if there is the slightest suspicion of spoilage, consumption should be avoided.

Spinach lasagne, lasagne with mushrooms or salmon lasagne in particular should only be eaten freshly baked during this period.

How to reheat lasagne in the oven

How do you prevent lasagna from being too dry?

The biggest danger when reheating lasagne is that too much liquid escapes due to the heat and the lasagne dries out.

To prevent the lasagne from being too dry, you can drizzle it with a little water, butter, milk or béchamel before reheating. This will soften the pasta sheets and make it taste like fresh. A second measure is to cover the lasagne to prevent the added liquid from escaping.

When reheating in the oven, use aluminum foil, in the microwave there is a cover made for this purpose, for heating in the pan simply use the pan lid.

The best way to retain the consistency of the lasagne is to reheat it in the steamer, which turns even lasagne that is several days old into a culinary delight.

How often can you reheat lasagna?

Sometimes you’ve simply made far too much lasagna and misjudged when reheating it.

Now there’s lasagne left over again, so you ask yourself, can you reheat lasagne a second or third time?

In principle, you can reheat lasagne as often as you like, but the shelf life must not be exceeded. It also loses quality each time it is reheated, so reheating it once is highly recommended.

How do you reheat frozen lasagna?

The best way to defrost lasagna is to leave it in the fridge overnight and then bake at 190 °C top and bottom heat for about 60 minutes, covered with aluminum foil.

To defrost frozen lasagne in the oven, you can reheat it for about 30 minutes at 130 °C top and bottom heat and then bake at 190 °C for a further 30 minutes.

You can find more information in this article on freezing and defrosting lasagne.

How do you keep lasagna warm?

Sometimes it is not possible to plan in advance exactly when the lasagne will be eaten, for example because guests are coming from far away and no exact time can be arranged.

Nevertheless, you don’t want to put the lasagne in the oven until the guests have arrived, because it takes a good 40 minutes to finish.

In this case, the question arises: How can you keep lasagna warm?

Lasagne can be kept warm in the oven at a temperature of 60 to 80 °C for around 1 to 2 hours. The temperature should not be set below 60 °C to prevent spores from germinating and potentially harmful toxins from forming.

In this article you will find practical tips for keeping food warm in the oven.

Another way to keep the lasagne warm for a long time is to wrap the baking dish in aluminum foil and roll it up in a thick bath towel. This method saves electricity and easily keeps the lasagne hot for an hour.
